The best time to see Lake Tekapo is usually between April and September, when the lupins grow by the church.

  • Mount Cook National Park: An adventure lover's paradise. Mount Cook National Park is 40 minutes from Twizel and offers fantastic views, hikes and glaciers. 
  • Mackenzie Basin: The Basin has a wide range of fun activities and is famous for a wealth of strong, epic-sized fish. The world’s largest Brown, weighing 19 kgs, was caught right here! 
  • Ben Ohau Station: This historic sheep station should be very familiar to Lord of the Rings fans. The flat, wide plain was used to film Pelenor during The Return of the King.

Lindis Pass is a dramatic mountain pass simply too arresting to just drive past without stopping to look. The tussock grasslands rolling across the hills can only be described as otherworldly. While the Pass is striking all year round, it is particularly irresistible during winter, when it has a light drizzle of white colouring from the falling snow. 

Take a moment to stretch your legs at the highest point of the South Island's state highway. You’ll find parking by the Lindis Pass lookout area and three beautiful hiking trails nearby.

5. Wānaka

Situated in outstanding natural beauty, Wānaka is the perfect place to experience some of the most iconic parts of the South Island. With nearby lavender farms, unique mountain views and a stunning lake, Wānaka is just begging to be experienced.

  • Wānaka Lavender Farm: You’ll find the lavender farm a short drive away from the town centre. Not only is the view absolutely lovely, but you can also try amazing lavender products, including lavender and honey ice cream. 
  • Roy’s Peak: There’s only one place to get the best view of the whole region. Climbing Roy’s Peak can take from 5 to 6 hours, but not only is the journey itself gorgeous, but the view from the summit is simply inspiring. 
  • That Wānaka Tree: Meet the town's local celebrity! A picture of that Wānaka Tree won the 2014 New Zealand Geographic photo of the year, and has become a symbol of resilience and determination ever since.
