Putting you in the driver's seat in Nelson

Our Nelson Airport branch is only 20 minutes away from Nelson city centre, so you can quickly pick up a hire car for any Marlborough adventure. The city consistently has some of the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand. So you'll have plenty of time to explore ‘Sunny Nelson’ once you’ve picked up your rental car! Here are some of our favourite sights to see in the city and the surrounding region:
Abel Tasman

Abel Tasman National Park

Only an hour-long road trip away from our Nelson Airport branch to reach one of New Zealand's most breathtaking natural reserves. Abel Tasman National Park features expansive golden beaches and crystal clear waters across its serene bays. Enjoy a walk on the beautiful Abel Tasman Coast Track, go seal, dolphin and penguin sightings on the shore, or see the coast from the waves on a sea kayak.

The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary

You’ll find some of the country’s most unique wildlife only an 18-minute drive from Nelson City Centre. The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is the largest fenced haven for endangered species in the South Island, including the kakariki karaka, tuatara and the iconic Kiwi. The centre features over 15km of wheelchair and stroller accessible walking trails for an immersive forest experience.

Centre of New Zealand Monument

You’re not quite in the centre yet! The centre of New Zealand is a monument surrounded by a series of walking trails. From the start at Botanical Reserve, you can enjoy a steep but beautiful journey to spectacular views of Nelson Tasman and the surrounding areas. The monument gets its name from an 1870s survey where the point was used as a central reference point for an early geodetic survey. However, it is not the true geographic centre of New Zealand. Interestingly, the Botanical Reserve is the historical site of New Zealand's first ever rugby game, first played in 1870!

Nelson Saturday Market

Don’t miss the Saturday Market if you’re visiting Nelson over the weekend! Located right in the heart of the city in Montgomery Square, the market is easy to access for locals and visitors alike. With over 200 stalls and 40 years of operation, the Saturday Market is one of the most established markets in New Zealand. Enjoy fresh local cuisine like lamb wraps and classic samosas, or try out artisan craft goods.

What do I need to know before driving in Nelson?

Nelson is typically calm with little congestion or traffic outside peak hours. When you’re ready to head out on the road, the majority of New Zealand roads are well-maintained and safe to drive on. However, roads in the city can be hilly and winding. Here's what you should know before hiring a car and driving in Nelson:

  • Drive on the left-hand side.
  • Plan extra time for peak hours due to traffic and congestion.
  • Follow the speed limit - the city centre is 60km/h (unless otherwise signposted) while highways are 100km/h.
  • Seat belts are mandatory.
  • Nelson and the surrounding region have many One-way bridges. Pay close attention to signage near bridges as rules for yielding can change depending on the sign.
  • Only hands-free mobile phones are allowed.
  • The alcohol limit is 0.05% for drivers over 20.
  • Rural roads may be narrow, windy or hilly.
  • Be sure to stop and park safely off the road if you are sightseeing or taking a scenic detour.
  • Weather conditions on the South Island can be harsh. Be wary of strong winds and ice roads in cold months.
  • Parking is often paid for in the city centre, and on-street parking can be limited.
  • Nelson is a bike-friendly city so take extra care and give cyclists space on the road.

Unauthorized cross-border travel will result in a breach of contract and incur a penalty charge. Parts of New Zealand are not suitable for access by rental vehicles. If the renter takes the Vehicle to any of the following areas, their Liability for any loss or damage may increase and any optional protection product selected such as Loss or Collision Damage Waiver will be voided: Ball Hutt Road (Mt Cook), Skippers Road (Queenstown), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), Te Paki Stream Bed, the road to Macetown in the Queenstown Area, the coast road to Russell (Northland), or any unformed road, track, or thoroughfare, including beaches and gravel roads that are not officially designated a road.

For any SUVs, Pick-ups, Vans, and any Premium vehicles, the deductible is reduced to 1100 NZD (GST inclusive). All electric vehicles have a reduced excess/deductible of 1300 NZD (GST inclusive). If CDW is declined, the renter will be required to pay these charges up to the deductible amount and seek compensation through their carrier of personal coverage. CDW is not insurance.

One way drop fees apply for all valid one-way rentals in New Zealand.

In addition, all renters must present a valid photo ID such as a passport or government-issued photo ID. A valid debit or credit card in the renter's name must be presented upon collection of the vehicle. If the driving license is written in a language and characters different from those of the country of rental, an International Driving Permit or a NZTA-approved English translation is also required. Renters are advised to check whether local authorities require foreign drivers to present an International Driving Permit to avoid the risk of potential fines. Renters with licenses from countries who are not part of the International Driving Permit Agreement should carry a certified translation. Customers can drive in the country of rental using their driving license from their country of origin for up to 12 months. If staying in the country longer, customers are required to convert to a NZ Driver’s License. In New Zealand there is no need for third party compulsory insurance (CTP) as there is a form of insurance scheme managed by the Accident Compensation Corporation (AA) which covers injuries caused by car accidents via a fund by levy that is paid as part of the motor vehicle registration fees. This scheme provides no fault cover, meaning that any person injured as a result of an accident is covered. This cover does not include property or damage to other vehicles. There is no fixed coverage limit per policy.
